To reduce the pollution of non-renewable energy sources, the government is shifting towards renewable energy sources. Solar energy is the most reliable energy source among them. Different states are also joining the central government to boost the demand among house owners.

Solar energy not only helps to reduce pollution but also helps to save the electricity bills of households. In UP, you can avail solar panel subsidy in Uttar Pradesh from both the central and state governments. There is a massive potential for generating solar electricity in this state which stands at 22.83 GWp.

In this blog, you will learn important information regarding the solar subsidy schemes available in Uttar Pradesh. Let’s get started.

Eligibility Criteria for Solar Subsidy in Uttar Pradesh

There are no specific guidelines for the state and central subsidy in UP. When you receive the central subsidy, you will also receive the state subsidy automatically within some days. The following are the eligibility criteria for the subsidy on solar panel in UP:

1. Solar Panels Must be DCR-Certified and ALMM-listed

The solar panels you install must fulfil the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) and be listed in the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).

For a solar panel to be DCR-certified all its components, including the solar cells, must be made in India. On the other hand, the ALMM is brought out by the MNRE. It is a list of solar panel models and manufacturers approved by the government for implementing government schemes. You can find the list of ALMM-listed models on the MNRE’s website.

2. Installation of On-Grid Solar System

The solar subsidy in Uttar Pradesh is available only for on-grid solar systems. Thus, to be eligible for the subsidy, the solar system must be connected to the DISCOM’s grid.

3. DISCOM Must be Part of the PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Your DISCOM must be listed on the PM Surya Ghar portal for you to be eligible for the solar scheme in UP. In Uttar Pradesh, the following DISCOMS are currently part of the PM Surya Ghar scheme:

  • Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd.
  • Kanpur Electric Supply Company Ltd.
  • Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd
  • Noida Power Company Limited
  • Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd.
  • Poorvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd.
  • Torrent Power Limited

4. DISCOM-Empanelment of Vendor

The vendor who installs your solar system must be enlisted with a DISCOM listed on the PM Surya Ghar portal. You can visit the PM Surya Ghar portal to find which vendors are empanelled with your DISCOM.

Benefits of Installing Solar Panels with Subsidies

Installing solar panels comes with numerous benefits, especially when financial subsidies are available. Here’s a breakdown of the key advantages:

  • Slash Your Electricity Bills: Solar panels turn sunshine into free power for your home. This means less reliance on the grid and more money staying in your pocket, especially as energy costs keep climbing. Over time, the savings can easily outweigh the initial investment.
  • Environmental Benefits: Unlike traditional energy sources, solar power is clean and renewable. By switching to solar, you’ll be doing your part to reduce pollution and fight climate change.
  • Easy to Maintain: Solar panels are pretty low-maintenance. Just occasional cleaning and sometimes replacing any malfunctioning equipment are all they need to keep running smoothly.
  • Load Reduction on Power Supply Grids: By generating power locally, solar panels help ease the strain on the power grid during peak usage times.
  • Increase Your Property Value: Solar panels can increase the value of your house significantly. Potential buyers appreciate the eco-friendly upgrade and the prospect of generating free electricity.

Government Policies and Support for Solar Energy in Uttar Pradesh

The UP government unveiled the “Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy 2022” to promote the adoption of solar energy. Its major aspects are:

  • Achieving 22,000 MW of solar power projects by 2027.
  • Encourages companies to build solar projects for their own use or to sell the generated electricity to buyers other than Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd.
  • Building solar parks.
  • Special “green energy corridor” for Bundelkhand region to evacuate power of 4,000 MW.
  • Land used for solar plants or parks will be completely exempt from stamp duty.
  • Solar projects will enjoy a 100% exemption from electricity duty for the first 10 years.
  • A training program will create 30,000 “Surya Mitras” (solar technicians) over the next five years at UPNEDA training centres.
  • Large-scale solar systems that include four hours of battery storage will be eligible for a state subsidy of Rs. 2.5 crore per MW.
  • Installation of rooftop solar plants in 13.5 lakh houses
