- About Sunsure Energy
The Delhi government will spend Rs. 570 crore to implement the solar subsidy in Delhi. It will also help fight the air pollution caused by diesel generators. Kejriwal also claimed that the policy will help to reduce inflation in Delhi.
According to Kejriwal, the subsidy will help customers recover the cost of installing their solar system in 4 years. All government properties with a rooftop area of over 500 sq. m. will also have to install solar systems.
Residents of Delhi can take advantage of both the Delhi solar panel subsidy and the central subsidy scheme. We have discussed both of them and the total subsidy amount by combining them below.
Delhi Government’s Solar Subsidy Scheme
As per the Delhi Solar Energy Policy 2023, the state government provides residential customers a subsidy of Rs. 2,000/kW up to Rs. 10,000 for installing solar systems. The subsidy is provided on the 1st electricity bill after a customer has commissioned the solar system.
Further, the Delhi government solar scheme provides a generation-based incentive (GBI) to different types of customers. It will be applicable for 5 years. The breakdown of the incentives is given below:
Type of Consumer | Monthly GBI |
Residential customers with a maximum solar capacity of 3 kW | Rs. 3/kWh
|
Residential customers with solar capacity between 3 kW and 10 kW | Rs. 2/kWh
|
Group housing societies/ Residential Welfare Associations with a total solar capacity of up to 500 kW (at 10 kW per house) | Rs. 2/kWh
|
Commercial and Industrial customers (for initial 200 MW installed) | Rs. 1/kWh
|
As per the Delhi Solar Portal, here’s how much GBI commercial and industrial customers can earn over 5 years with solar systems of different capacities:
Capacity of Solar System | GBI Over 5 Years for C&I Customers* |
1 kW | Rs. 6000 |
2 kW | Rs. 12,000 |
3 kW | Rs. 18,000 |
4 kW | Rs. 24,000 |
5 kW | Rs. 30,000 |
*The GBI has been calculated assuming that a 1 kW solar system generates 1200 units annually.
Overall, the Delhi Government aims to achieve a solar capacity of 4.5 GW by 2026-27. Out of this, 750 MW will comprise rooftop solar systems installed within the state and 3,750 MW of utility-scale solar outside of Delhi.
PM Surya Ghar Subsidy
Apart from solar subsidy Delhi, residential customers can also get the PM Surya Ghar subsidy as Central Financial Assistance (CFA). The subsidy breakdown under PM Surya Ghar is given below:
Capacity of Solar System | PM Surya Ghar Solar Subsidy |
1 kW | Rs. 30,000 |
2 kW | Rs. 60,000 |
3 kW | Rs. 78,000 |
Total Subsidy Under Central and State Government Schemes
Here’s the total subsidy customers can get by combining the solar subsidy in Delhi with the PM Surya Ghar scheme:
Capacity of Solar System | Solar Subsidy Delhi | PM Surya Ghar Subsidy | Total Subsidy |
1 kW | Rs. 2,000 | Rs. 30,000 | Rs. 32,000 |
2 kW | Rs. 4,000 | Rs. 60,000 | Rs. 64,000 |
3 kW | Rs. 6,000 | Rs. 78,000 | Rs. 84,000 |
4 kW | Rs. 8,000 | Rs. 78,000 | Rs. 86,000 |
5 kW | Rs. 10,000 | Rs. 78,000 | Rs. 88,000 |
The following are the major advantages of installing an on-grid solar system in Delhi:
The combination of the state government and central government’s subsidy can significantly reduce the solar panel price in Delhi. It makes it highly affordable for middle-class and lower-income households to install solar panels.
By using solar electricity, households and businesses can reduce their power consumption to less than 200 units monthly. It will lead to zero bill payments for electricity. This is because in Delhi a household does not have to pay for electricity if their monthly electricity consumption is under 200 units.
The generation-based incentive ensures income if solar electricity generated by a customer exceeds the monthly electricity consumption. The incentive is adjusted against the customer’s monthly electricity bill and disbursed by DISCOM within 7 days of the billing cycle’s completion.
Thermal power plants produce power by burning fossil fuels which lead to greenhouse gas emissions. However, people in Delhi can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by taking advantage of the solar subsidy in Delhi.
The government expects the scheme to generate green jobs and encourage the training of young people for solar installations and maintenance. It could also lead to the creation of solar companies in Delhi NCR.
In the table below, you can see how the combined central plus state solar subsidy can reduce the solar panel price in Delhi. It also covers the 5 kW solar panel price in Delhi with subsidy.
Size of Solar System | Cost of Solar System (Rs.) | Total Subsidy | Cost After Subsidy (Rs.) |
1 kW | Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 85,000 | Rs. 32,000 | Rs. 43,000 to Rs. 53,000 |
2 kW | Rs. 1,50,000 to Rs. 1,70,000 | Rs. 64,000 | Rs. 86,000 to Rs. 1,06,000 |
3 kW | Rs. 1,89,000 to Rs. 2,15,000 | Rs. 84,000 | Rs. 1,05,000 to Rs. 1,31,000 |
4 kW | Rs. 2,52,000 to Rs. 2,85,600 | Rs. 86,000 | Rs. 1,66,000 to Rs. 1,99,600 |
5 kW | Rs. 3,15,000 to Rs. 3,57,000 | Rs. 88,000 | Rs. 2,27,000 to Rs. 2,69,000 |
10 kW | Rs. 5,31,000 to Rs. 6,07,000 | Rs. 88,000 | Rs. 4,43,000 to Rs. 5,19,000 |
